Jessica Braun
PhD Candidate

I am a second year PhD student at Brock University studying muscle physiology. I research the causes of different muscle pathologies as well as potential therapeutic interventions. Outside of school I love to play piano, knit, and hang out with my dog!

I (she/her) am currently a Master’s of Science Candidate at Brock University studying the effectiveness of secondary school mental health programs on help-seeking attitudes of youth in Canada. My research interests include barriers to mental health treatment, improving mental health literacy in youth, and school-based mental health initiatives. My goal is to make mental health help available and accessible for all youth! Outside of work I love to cook, play volleyball, cuddle my puppy, and take on DIY projects to upcycle second-hand furniture
Isabelle Hill

I (She/Her) am a Master’s Student researching physical activity promotion interventions for people with
Multiple Sclerosis. The goal of my research is to find strategies that will help encourage people to be
more physically active. I have worked within academia
mentoring students and providing teaching and research assistance to professors and researchers. I am
a strong ally and advocate for BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ and all other underrepresented groups and strive to
empower those around me to do so as well. My favourite activities include hanging out with my friends
and family, playing soccer and going camping!
Debbie Johnson

After completing my 2 year Practical Nursing Diploma at Niagara College I knew I wanted to further my education and obtain my BScN through Nipissing University. Currently I am balancing online schooling and working as a nurse in a local hospital. I have experience with many different nursing fields/skills, and lots of practice on time management! When I’m not working or studying, I enjoy travelling and playing with my dog.
Mia Geromella

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biomedical sciences and an MSc in Applied Health sciences, both also at Brock. My current doctoral research focuses on muscle metabolism. I utilize preclinical models of menopause to investigate the role of the skeletal muscle energetics on improving health in the absence of the hormone estrogen. In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors, travelling and participating in athletics!
Sophie Hamstra

I am a PhD candidate working with the Centre for Bone and Muscle Health at Brock University. I study the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of cardiomyopathies which is when the heart muscle stops functioning properly. Outside of working in the lab, I enjoy reading, hiking, rock climbing, golf and playing cards and video games with friends. I'm very excited to share my experiences in STEM and to help grow the Women in STEM community!
Caroline Hummell

I am currently a PhD student at Brock University studying how quality relationships in sport influence the healthy development of youth using a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Outside of my studies, I work for the Youth Research and Evaluation eXchange where I help make research and evaluation accessible to Ontario’s youth-serving sector. I’m a former Division 1 basketball player and girls’ basketball coach who is passionate about mentoring the next generation of youth!

I completed my BSc in Biological Sciences in Brazil and I am now a first year Master’s student at Brock University, in the Biotechnology program. My research is about analyzing the relationship between microscopic fungi and their hosts by using different microscopy techniques. In my free time I like to go for a hike, listen to music, ride my bike and read books.
